On it!

Sorry for the lapse in communication. Look for my new work at Craftland in Providence this Friday and at the RISD Alumni Sale on December 8th at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

Corpus Callosum

I made a poster for the show tomorrow at 186 Carpenter Street in Providence. Corpus Callosum is on tour all the way from San Francisco, and Speaker For The Dead is joining them for some New England dates. Corpus Callosum has an amazing glass harmonium of tuned wine glasses (okay, not a true harmonium but SUPER INSPIRING nonetheless) , accordion, mandolin, guitars, percussion, voices, bells, and found objects. It should start by 8:30 and be over by 10:00, and I guarantee it will be a lovely time!

Some work in Warren

I have a piece on display at the Imago Foundation for the Arts in Warren. My "Swing for singing" is in the "Love in June" show. The swing was recently at AS220's Pop- Up Gallery on Westminster Street in Providence. I really like the direction this piece is going in, and you should check it out if you're nearby. I'll be making a costume to wear when performing on it, eventually. Photos soon.

Glass Rain

Last year I began flameworking thin pieces of borosilicate glass to sculpt raindrops. I assembled lots of pieces to construct these "Glass Rain" installations.

I installed a Glass Rain chandelier at the offices of the Rhode Island State House over the summer. It was on display in the Atrium Gallery for August and September.

This piece was about ten feet high, five feet deep, and four feet wide. The glass drops look so realistically watery when they're full of light!

Maker Faire in San Mateo

Project photo.
Hello from California!
It seems colder here than in Rhode Island right now, but I'm very much looking forward to the Maker Faire in San Mateo next weekend! I'll be demonstrating glass torchwork, as usual. It's open to the public May 21st and 22nd, and I think it will be the biggest Maker Faire yet, the largest contemporary DIY convergence in the world!

Please come out and say hi!

Tech issues

I'm having some problems getting a borrowed netbook to work. That computer has my travel content on it, but in the meantime-- some older photos!
Lightning Bolt played at Sound Sessions in Providence a few years ago, outside behind the Providence Black Repertory Theater. Here a police officer tried to break up the show because their set was too loud! From left to right, Brian Chippendale, me, Mike Knives, Alex Field, JoJo, ?, and an angry police officer.

I used to live at an awesome collective house in Worcester, Massachusetts. Here is a pile of punks in the library. Look at how many feet there are! Eight people? I stand out easily, as is often the case. (I think color is the cheapest and easiest way to make life more exciting!)

As big as your head!

Kiku, or Japanese chrysanthemums, have such lyrical beauty.
These blossoms are as large as cabbages!
Chrysanthemums are in the Asteraceae, or daisy, family. Other composites include zinnias, sunflowers, asters, black- eyed susans, marigolds, and dandelions.

The family resemblance is especially apparent here.
There are many different classes and cultivars of mums.
Like other Japanese art forms that have been refined over centuries, the champion cultivation of chrysanthemums distills so much surprising and mysterious complexity into simple and beautiful perfection.
Where's the surprise? What is the mystery? Look underneath this mountain of 464 blossoms, and find that they all grow out of a single stem!!!
My favorite species is the spider mum.
Some styles of fireworks are called chrysanthemums. What a likeness!

Downtown Providence

A number of storefronts in downtown Providence participate in a program called Providence Art Windows. Every three months, twelve people are selected to do installations. Pictured above is my installation-- 120 forms of lasercut textiles and flameworked glass. This will be up until mid- September at 201 Westminster Street.

Galleries?

Gil wearing my rufflebeard and holding "Wallflower Party" at Craftland

Coinciding with my decision to cease selling at craft shows, I have work in two galleries. This was totally unplanned!
I have some really fun things going up at Craftland's gallery. The show, called "Material Desires," opens this Thursday, February 11th from 5-8. That show is up until March 13th.

The Imago Gallery
in Warren, Rhode Island is hosting an exhibition of work from RISCA grant winners. That show opens this Friday, February 12th from 6-9. I have a lot of labor- intensive jewelry pieces in this show; literally months and months of work.
