Ivy Glick

1996
Ivy Glick is seven days older than me and we have been friends for half of our lives.

waiting for a pie to bake in 1998
We met in RISD's Pre-College Program when we were both students in the jewelry/ light metals course.

We lived together when I moved to Providence full- time in the spring of 1998.

She was majoring in photography and I was a frequent subject.

This was from a photo shoot for my RISD yearbook picture in 2001.
I first introduced her to glass torchwork in 2002. She was finishing her Master of Arts in Teaching.

Now she does this and teaches art in South Carolina.
Ivy introduced me to the idea that a photographer's sentiments towards a subject can be legible in their images. She still takes the most flattering pictures of me. I love you, too, Ivy!

Inca Písac

It's a lot of work-- climbing Incan ruins everyday. Okay, "everyday" so far is defined as yesterday and today. The greatest heights of this site are as much as 11,000 feet above sea level.
To give you a sense of scale, these tiny people are working on archaeological excavation and preservation of the steps, the same ones pictured above! These ruins are immense. It is so unbelievable to imagine how many people, and how much time & energy must have been spent to build and preserve this- only one of SO MANY oeuvres!
See the steps at the edges of the steps?

My foot is pictured here at the top of many stone steps. In this image I was already more than halfway down the mountain! I asked a local how many people die here each year, and she said, "Surprisingly few."
Hey Mom, I'm okay!

Contrasts

Well, I didn't know about this until I got here. I'm doing okay, using the Buteyko Method to open my lungs. I haven't yet needed to use an inhaler. Today I walked about seven miles and took a few pictures along the way.
What a striking façade!
If you feel that you need to put bars on your windows, they might as well look good, no?
No, really.
Old and new
The tiny box on the left is populated by one person, who I think is trying to sell apartments in the building they plan to construct on that site. Note the banner of the fake outdoors that separates his shoebox from the palace next door.
Read every part of this image that you find legible.

Glassy waters

We went for a walk by the river. My friend wanted to show me the bend after falls where lots of broken glass accumulates on the banks.
Before the bend I noticed the little stalactites-- frozen drops on twigs in the river, growing longer as the water level fell.
In little alcoves the ice increased on itself like pancake batter.

Thanks for sharing adventures and for showing me new things in my own neighborhood.

I like to take photos

This is a piranha! I took this photo at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut.

I love echinoderms and anemones! The animals below are mirrored in the surface of the water above. I took this photo at the Mystic Aquarium, too.

I can't remember what kind of plant this was at the New York Botanical Garden, but I really love this form.

I took this picture in Kyoto. I love the contrast of traditional and modern, and all of the different lines in the photo.

I took this photo in Manila at the International Festival of Lights.
