2 doodles

I just returned from a month in California visiting family, friends,
digital fabrication spaces, and exhibiting at the Maker Faire.
Sketchbooks are convenient to work with when traveling. The
stationary store in the Kinokuniya Mall always yields new drawing
tools and I like using ballpoint pens in soft, brushy ways. That red
text above actually says, "Good people disobey bad laws."

Back in Providence, I'm playing around in the shared studio
downtown. New friend Paul Brazio gave us each storyboarding
moleskines. I made this image with pencil shavings and tape.

Ivy Glick

1996
Ivy Glick is seven days older than me and we have been friends for half of our lives.

waiting for a pie to bake in 1998
We met in RISD's Pre-College Program when we were both students in the jewelry/ light metals course.

We lived together when I moved to Providence full- time in the spring of 1998.

She was majoring in photography and I was a frequent subject.

This was from a photo shoot for my RISD yearbook picture in 2001.
I first introduced her to glass torchwork in 2002. She was finishing her Master of Arts in Teaching.

Now she does this and teaches art in South Carolina.
Ivy introduced me to the idea that a photographer's sentiments towards a subject can be legible in their images. She still takes the most flattering pictures of me. I love you, too, Ivy!

Hairrings

My hair has been very long three times in my life. Each time I cut it, I braided it and saved it. I recently made earrings from one of the batches. These are the simplest hair extensions, but it is my own natural hair.

Omni- color braid

This is Melanie Dawn Harter, and here is the original source of her content. (Thanks for the info, snowskinmooncakes!) I know it doesn't show every color (omni), but it's more hues and shades than I think I've ever seen in a solitary hairstyle.

Hair- do

I don't usually post images of things I didn't make myself, but I really want to share these. Most of them are from Hairport in Lisbon, Portugal.

Anticipating

It's getting to be that time of year again, when the holiday sales are approaching;

Time to dye my hair.

Lip balm

I made a big batch of lip balm from beeswax, lanolin, and oil. I got the wax from a beekeeper, and the other ingredients were being thrown away by a health food store because they were about to "expire." I made the stuff a while ago, but every now and then I refill the small container that I carry around with me. The tin only holds 20 grams and I found it, empty, under a tree in Paris. This photo shows the molten mix. When pouring something like this into a container it's important to leave a little space between the surface of the liquid and the top edge of the container. I found out the hard way that the miniscus can stick to the lid and cause the entire mass to be pulled out when opening the container.

Today I went out dressed this way. It proved useful later in the day while riding on the back of a motorcycle in the cold.

Here's how I can wear my beard like Andy Warhol or a mopey moppy teenager.

Ruffle beard

I made this ruffle beard to keep my face warm while biking, but I wore it last night for Halloween.

This is a detail of the sweatshirt I'm wearing in the above photo. I laid each piece individually and heat set them with an iron. I arranged them to look like knit stitches and reptile skin.
